Exning Tennis Club – Great British Tennis Weekend

Great British Tennis Weekend

Thank you to everyone who turned out for our Great British Tennis Weekend

The tennis season is marching on and come rain or shine there has been plenty of activity at the club, not just with our regular Club play, tournaments and matches but also with the open days we have held.

We held a junior open evening in early June which despite rainy beginnings saw over 13 children attend with their parents and all enjoyed their taster session. It was great to see so many children on the courts and good to talk to the parents as well.

We held an open day in July as part of the LTA’s Great British Tennis Weekend initiative. This far exceeded the expectations of us all.

Lots of work was carried out behind the scenes including working in the rain to get the club looking at it’s best.

With a great deal of trepidation we launched our open day on the GBTW site and then spent hours advertising the event and we were amazed at the response we received in advance bookings on the website.

The day itself dawned with the forecast looking ominous however the members were up at the club at 9.30am getting everything set up in the rain in readiness for 11am. The request for sunshine had obviously been delayed due to rain but it got there in the end.

Attendees started arriving from 10.30am in their masses far exceeding the pre booked list. Everyone who came along was able to get on the courts at some point in some way or another due to lots of juggling of numbers and a couple of very willing coaches who took up the challenge of all the Juniors that arrived, last count was approx. 35 children in total across the hour. Well done to Jonny & David, medals in the post!!

There were many takers for the Rusty rackets and beginners sessions with lots of people enjoying the Adult free play sessions as well which carried out through the rain which decided to make a return as someone forgot to pay the sunshine bill for a while.

Once the rain cleared and people started to enjoy the fares of the Clubs barbeque it was time to bring out the big guns, Terry & Alex with their ball machine and what a great opportunity for so many to try out some shots.

If was fantastic to see so many people on the day. Between those who helped, those who booked sessions on the courts and those who just came along we had over 80 people.

The last attendee left an hour and a half after the day was meant to finish and the members that stayed were glad to just sit and relax in the shade and reflect on a fantastic day that saw the club in use as it should be.

From the texts, messages and emails we have received it seems that we the organisers were not the only ones who believed the day to have been a huge success.

A massive thanks goes out to all the members who helped or supported the event in varying ways, with help in advance, baking a cake or help on the day this all went so far in making the event a huge success.
